I really wanted to try planting bush baby watermelons a couple years back…. So i directly sowed some into our awful back yard dirt. Nothing grows in it, it’s compacted clay, and the sprouts have a hard time coming through. If by chance they make it up, they’re small shriveled and usually die. I’ve been researching on how to fix our back yard dirt. Any tips?
Anyway last year I came across the seeds I had put up and saw they were about to expire. Not really wanting to throw them away… or do anything special I decided to plant them in a strawberry grow bag I had. This grow bag had about nine holes… and each hole I planted three seeds of bush baby watermelons from bakers creek seeds.

Because I knew that the watermelons were heavy drinkers and feeders and being planted too close together, I watered them with a gallon of water mixed with a tablespoon of liquid kelp fertilizer every morning. The grow bag, helps with water drainage and keeps the plants from becoming root bound… I didn’t think it would work but the results were amazing!

This allowed me to grow a ton of watermelons in a very very tiny space.
The yard did get over ran with vines causing it to look like a crazy jungle but the taste of those home grow bush baby watermelons made the challenges worth it.
I used seeds from https://www.rareseeds.com….. and I was surprised that even after their expiration date that everything germinated beautifully. 10 out of ten would try again!
